Introduction To The Region
The area where Hippo Creek is situated depicts the Africa- and South African bushveld. The Hippo Creek and surrounding areas can be described as a birdwathcher’s paradise. Bird- and wildlife is in abundance, and special hunting trips can be arranged through our partners in the area. Pigeons and doves to be hunted in certain concession areas and bird hunting opportunities are plentiful. A vast number of game farms are located close by and the possibility of going on an antelope or buck hunt should not easily be passed. South Africa has a vast number of species, and this could be a unforgettable trip before or after a visit to Hippo Creek. Game drives can be undertaken on farms adjacent to Hippo Creek, with this currently being introduced by Hippo Creek.
Fly fishing for the illusive South African yellow fish is most popular and is available all along the Vaal River. If fly fishing is your passion, Hippo Creek has it’s own riverfront property and arrangements can be made for this adventure. On special request, trolling for South African Cat fish can be arranged, especially during summer when they are in abundance.
The Vaal River flows through rapids and white water rafting and canoeing on these parts of the river is a great pastime!
Travelling through the Vredefort Dome is a must and quite spectacular. The Dome which resulted from a massive meteorite hit, can also be experienced on foot hiking or a paddling route. On route back, a stopover at the little hamlet of Parys is recommended to savour several local roadside restaurants and experience true South African cuisine and hospitality. If you are into the collection of antiques this visit is a must.
If you are historically inclined, the lively University town of Porchefstroom is only 60 Km away and well worth a visit.
Gold Reef City depicts the history of Gold Mining in South Africa over the last century. Situated in the Southern parts of Johannesburg 45 min drive from Hippo Creek.
For the die hard golfers there are 3 very good courses within 30 Km from the club and would certainly be worth your while to visit and take in a game of 18 holes! Other nearby facilities include a Lion Park.
